What You Need to Get Started
- A standard deck of 52 playing cards (no jokers for basic Rummy)
- 2–6 players (more is more fun!)
- A flat surface to play on
How to Play Rummy – Simple Rules for Beginners
- Deal the cards: Each player gets 10 cards (if 2 players), or 7 cards (if 3–4 players). Place the rest of the deck in the middle as the draw pile. Flip the top card to start the discard pile.
- Make sets and runs: Your goal is to group your cards into sets (three or four of the same number, like 7♥ 7♣ 7♠) and runs (three or more cards in a row of the same suit, like 4♠ 5♠ 6♠).
- Take turns: On your turn, draw one card (either from the draw pile or the top card of the discard pile), then discard one card.
- Lay down your cards: When you have valid sets and runs, you can place them face up on the table.
- Go out: The round ends when a player gets rid of all their cards by forming sets/runs and discarding the last card.
- Score the game: Add up points for any cards remaining in your hand; lower scores are better. Play several rounds to decide the winner!
